In this stage of breastfeeding, the mother’s milk is the main food of the child and as a whole food, it is necessary for her to take food promptly, in the right quantity. So that the milk produced is of good quality. Also, regular consumption of poppy seeds, fenugreek, garden cress seeds, milk, ginger, ghee in the mother’s diet improves the quality and quantity of milk and improves the physical and intellectual development of the baby.
At the same time, if shatavari kalpa (asparagus kalpa) is used with milk in the morning and evening, it affects the mammary glands and increases the milk quality. Sometimes the mother should consume light foods and home remedies like ginger and jaggery if the baby shows symptoms like indigestion, diarrhea, vomiting, stomach upset, fever if there is heavy food in the mother’s diet.
Ayurveda says that in such a situation, the mother needs to be given these medicines along with the baby. This cures the baby’s illnesses quickly. Other medications may not be needed.
Although breast milk is sufficient for the baby, in some complicated deliveries, preterm babies, babies in the NICU, or case of some illnesses, breast milk cannot be given, it is suggested that, the midwife has to be appointed for breastfeeding.
The best example of this is that “Chhatrapati Sambhaji Raje” grandmother Jijau had appointed Dharau (midwife) after taking a lot of exams to decide his Dharau. Currently, there are breast milk banks in big cities in which the age of the mother donating milk is used only after a physical examination and laboratory tests, and their milk is pasteurized and stored for three to four months.
Where there is no such facility as well as employed women demand powdered milk from doctors as an alternative to breastfeeding it is extremely wrong. Instead, if the employed woman carefully removes the breast milk in a clean container, she can use it at room temperature for up to four hours.
Besides, formula feed powder is obtained using boiled and cooled water. Also, cow’s, buffalo’s, or goat’s milk mixed with water is often used for children.
Cow’s milk is sweet, soft, smooth, pleasing, delicious, dietary, radiant, enlightening, confirming; therefore, it is advisable to use Indian desi cow’s milk mixed with water.
Avoid buffalo milk as it increases heaviness, slows down sleep, slows down the brain, and has less quality than a cow.
Goat’s milk is easy to digest as well as constipates during diarrhea and reduces cough, asthma, and shortness of breath. Therefore, goat’s milk should be used in children suffering from cold, cough, asthma, diarrhea, and emaciation.
Use of formula feeds should be minimized or avoided as much as possible.
